"The face of an angel can awaken the demon. Beauty can possess you." - The Neon Demon Teaser
Possess You? Probably. Perplex you? Definitely.
The Neon Demon. What is it?
That's a good question because I have no clue. It's Edgy. Mysterious. Dangerous. Enticing.
It was only my mother, some random woman(who walked out halfway), and I in the whole theater on opening day. And, I came out of the theater alone, because even my mother walked out near the end. But, I stayed.
Armed with a natural beauteous glow, young Jesse(Elle Fanning) moves to Los Angeles to jump-start her modeling career. Her innocence and vitality are soon to be consumed by a group of women who are determined to get what she has-- quite literally. The Neon Demon, a film by Nicolas Winding Refn(Drive, Only God Forgives, Bronson), draws its gratifying power from the over-exaggerated dichotomy of natural beauty versus human-made beauty.
After watching it, I can understand why it wouldn't have a large appeal. The movie itself is shallow. The characters are shallow. However, I believe that what makes it exceptional. It's very well executed, beautiful to look at, but beyond weird at points that make it Meta in a way. The movie is shallow to represent the shallowness of the Fashion? Beauty? Sound like a stretch? Probably Is.
Yet, it won't leave my mind.
With an indescribable alluring charm, The Neon Demon scrutinizes the power U.S American society places on natural beauty and the narcissistic, yet dangerous, values it feeds its young.
How does the movie accomplish this analyzation? I don't know. Maybe, it's what I need to tell myself to make sense of the movie. I still don't know if I like the movie, to be honest. I don't know what I truly watched. Was it bad? Was it good? So bad it's good? Too good for my knowing? I don't think there is a consensus, standard or rule on if it is or not.
For me, what I remember the most and why it earns my highest praises, is that every second, every frame dripped with symbolism and foreshadowing. Not to mention, it was even somewhat funny in a couple of places.
Maybe beauty has possessed me.
The Neon Demon, what is it?
I leave that for you to find out because I have no clue... Yet. But, I know I like it.
I need to watch it again.
FLOOR OR DOOR?
Should it have been left on the cutting room floor or should you be running out the door to see it?
Out The Door! Out The Door! Out! The! Door! Child, please! Someone come take me to see it again! Please!
Go see it for yourself!
It's a polarizing movie. Can't promise you'll love it. But can't guarantee you'll hate it. But, either way, you'll be thinking about for days to come. It's a movie that can't be explained... just experienced.
Go judge for yourself! What are you waiting for?!
A instant Favorite, therefore a platinum door!
